The event was organized by Jamaica’s Business Ministry, the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC), in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and proved to be a good platform for the ADSC to connect with local goods producers, exporters and other economic development partners. The aim of the island wide roadshow is to increase awareness of the range of business services offered through Jamaica’s Business Ministry, its agencies and partners and to enhance connectivity between markets and customers.Building Capacity and Raising AwarenessAs Jamaica’s Trade Remedies Authority, ADSC’s mission is not only to defend domestic producers and exporters in the face of unfair competition, but also to equip local industry with trade remedy knowledge and tools that can strengthen their resilience, protect their investment and facilitate growth. The ADSC also assists Jamaican Exporters with identifying potential expansion opportunities generated through trade remedy actions globally. During the event, ADSC’s Technical Staff provided insight into the international trading landscape and how the Commission’s industry training, consultation and investigation services help to facilitate growth and development. “We teach local businesses how to take trade remedy action when faced with challenges from imports. Where possible, training and consultations are tailored to the specific needs of the industries we work with. We also provide short online training on how to access and analyze international trade data provided through the International Trade Centre. This training helps businesses to increase their understanding of global demand and supply specific to their sectors and can therefore enhance strategic planning and decision-making,” said Andrew Mighty, Senior Economist. The ADSC team also used the opportunity to engage with representatives from the IDB along with other entities that participated in the Roadshow to strengthen the Commission’s network. “We have long realized that it takes a village to support the growth of Jamaican business. As partners in economic development, we become more helpful in our interactions with local businesses when we can collaborate and share information on the range of business assistance services that are available locally,” said Andrea Dawes, Executive Director of the Commission. The event was the first of four roadshows planned for the current financial year; three similar events are being organized for Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Kingston. MSMEs are encouraged to support the Roadshow and take advantage of the funding opportunities, capacity building, business assistance, prizes and surprises provided at these events.
